VATICAN CITY – The Roman Catholic Church last week expanded their reach into new media by urging priests to preach using online videos, blogs and websites.
“Priests stand at the threshold of a new era,” wrote Pope Benedict XVI in a statement published on the Vatican website on Saturday. “They are challenged to proclaim the Gospel by employing the latest generation of audiovisual resources.”
The message, part of an annual address to priests, exhorts leaders to engage in new media as followers embrace by the millions social networking tools such as Facebook and Twitter in recent years.
In Singapore, more than two thirds of the 31 Catholic churches here have either websites or Facebook accounts, but only a handful of priests have taken to blogging. Even fewer tweet.
Many priests say while going online is fine, they draw the line at personal blogs, citing the lack of clerical oversight and fear of vanity as considerable barriers. Continue reading »
